Cryptocurrency domain names are becoming a hot investment asset!

Although the history of cryptocurrency is not long, the ecosystem value has exceeded $250 billion in just a decade or so, including third-party platforms, competing blockchain projects, exchanges and brokerage services, wallets and payment processors. However, many people may not pay attention to a seemingly insignificant crypto vertical: domain names.

In fact, every crypto project and enterprise wants to have a unique domain name, and some top Bitcoin and blockchain website domain names are now worth more than hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in a few cases even millions of dollars. Of course, for those who registered crypto-related domain names, they may not have thought that the blockchain and cryptocurrency industry would develop so rapidly at first, and some domain name owners did not even intend to use these website names for the crypto industry. For example, the domain name owner of Ethereum.com left a message for visitors on the website:

"This domain name was registered on March 11, 2011. It originally had nothing to do with blockchain technology, but now Ethereum also uses the same name, so the domain name of this website is sold for $10,000,000."

Of course, as digital assets become more and more popular, many people do register domain names in order to sell them later for huge differential profits. Currently, many domain names related to cryptocurrency and blockchain are being sold at high prices, such as Blockchain.com, Bitcoin.com, Ethereum.com, Crypto.com, Btc.com and Bitcoin.org.

Moreover, since web domain names can be traded, "domain name squatting" has become more and more common. Some people will buy a large number of domain names related to specific products or industries, such as cryptocurrency and blockchain, and wait for a good time to sell them for profit. On Twitter, you can see many domain name squatters listing a large number of website names and hoping to sell them (as shown in the figure below).

Notable cryptocurrency domain name transactions

In 2009, Eth.com was sold to a company for nearly $20,000, and then sold again in 2017 for $2 million, and is now used exclusively for Ethereum mining;

In 2017, a person from Shanghai, China, bought Globalcoin.com for $35,516;

In January 2018, the Cryptotrading.com domain was sold to William Thomas for $35,000;

In 2018, Domainmarket.com founder Mike Mann sold the domain Cryptoworld.com to Binance for $195,000, while he only spent $11 on the domain in 2011;

In April 2019, Triangl co-founder Craig Ellis sold the domain Cryptoworld.com to Binance for $195,000. Ellis) purchased the Cryptobank.com domain name for an unknown price, and the website is currently undeveloped;

Other notable crypto-related domain name transactions include: Bitcointransfer.co ($12,000), Coinsbio.com ($1,000), 360crypto.com ($30,000), Block-chain.com.de ($20,000), Btcwallet.club ($10,000), and Tokenpay.es ($12,000).

As time comes to 2019, the frequency of cryptocurrency domain name transactions is becoming faster and faster. In the past few months, many website domain names related to cryptocurrency names have been sold, including: Cryptocpa.com ($12,000), Owncoin.com ($2,050), Cryptofocus.com ($1,155), Bitcoin.red ($4,860), Bituniverse.com ($3,156), Coinpig.com ($1,225), Runsonripple.com ($10,000), Bitsec.com ($4,550), Cryptoman.com ($1,350). As of August 18, the average price of digital currency-related domain names was about $1,057, which has begun to approach the historical high of $2,000-4,000 between September and November 2017.

Domain name investment is risky, so be cautious when entering the market

It is undeniable that the cryptocurrency market has improved in 2019, so the price of cryptocurrency will remain high in the near future and for some time to come - this is obviously beneficial to cryptocurrency domain name investors, because when the market improves, more new companies and new projects will emerge, and they all need a good domain name as their own brand. Currently, the keywords of domain names with the suffixes ".com, .org, .io" include: Bit, Btc, Bitcoin, Crypto, Coin, Chain, Block, Blockchain, Faucet, Token and Airdrop.

Of course, registering a domain name is a "gamble" in itself. If the cryptocurrency market is sluggish or fluctuates greatly, it will also bring greater risks to those who invest in related domain names.
