On October 31, ICANN officially announced plans to increase fees charged to domain name registries and registrars, including the "ICANN tax" that registrars usually pass on to domain name registrants.

The nonprofit organization released a lengthy white paper that mainly expressed the following points:

1. For registries, ICANN intends to increase quarterly fixed fees from $6,250 to $6,450 and transaction fees per domain name from $0.25 to $0.258. It intends to continue to increase these prices in line with inflation.

2. For registrars, the government intends to increase transaction fees per domain name from $0.18 to $0.20 and increase total variable fees shared among registrars from $3.42 million to $3.8 million.

On the registry side, ICANN has the contractual right to raise prices.

For increases in registrar fees, approval must be obtained from registrars that account for 2/3 of all registrar fees.

ICANN considers the change in registrar fees a price reduction. It discounted the previous fees by 10% to incentivize registrars to adopt the 2009 Registrar Accreditation Agreement. This was obviously a long time ago. Most registrars pass on the fees for each domain name as a separate line item to customers, so registrants can easily see the increase.

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is a global non-profit organization responsible for managing the Internet's Domain Name System (DNS) and IP address allocation. As one of the core institutions of the Internet, ICANN's responsibilities are to ensure the stable operation and security of the Internet, as well as to promote the development of the Internet and global interconnection.
