The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has announced that it will terminate the registration contracts for five new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) managed by Asia Green IT Systems (AGIT). The domains include .pars, .shia, .tci, .nowruz and (.xn--mgbt3dhd).
According to information on the official ICANN website, the agreements for these domains have all entered the "termination process" stage after the violation notice was issued in July. The contract termination process includes mediation, arbitration, and ultimately the termination of the contract, which was scheduled to expire next month.
The contract termination is not surprising. Last month, the five gTLDs were transferred to the Emergency Backend Registry Program due to the failure of key systems to operate as required by the contract. The move was due to AGIT's failure to pay its back-end service provider and has not paid ICANN fees, causing these top-level domains to cease normal operation.
It is worth noting that most of these gTLDs are not widely used. Among them, the Iranian New Year-themed .nowruz has a small number of third-party registrations, but the other domains have never been launched in the decade that AGIT has been contracted to operate. .tci is a special case, as AGIT was originally scheduled to operate the domain on behalf of the Telecommunication Company of Iran (now Telecom).
This decision by ICANN marks a severe response to irresponsible domain name management and aims to maintain the stability and credibility of the domain name system.
