DENIC eG, the .de registry, has announced that it wants to lay the foundation for the next generation of domain name configuration with the RESTful Configuration Protocol (RPP).

In the early 2000s, domain configuration was characterized by separate registration interfaces. Each solution was different, and registrars had to incur high costs and technical investment to communicate with different registries.

In 2004, the adoption of the EPP standard (RFC 5730 - 5734) brought much-needed standardization, and it became the cornerstone for communication between hundreds of registries and thousands of registrars.

RPP is designed to be a modern complement to EPP. It is based on the REST architecture and JSON data format to make domain configuration more convenient and efficient. Its goal is to further simplify integration between registries and registrars, promote new market players, and accelerate innovation. RPP has the potential to usher in a new era of flexibility and collaboration in the domain name industry.
