Indonesia's national top-level domain (ccTLD) .id has recently achieved an important milestone, with the number of registered domain names exceeding 1 million. According to a report by the local registry PANDI, as of now, the total number of .id registered domain names has reached 1,073,779, breaking the one million mark on November 14 this year.

1. Reasons behind the rapid growth

With many top-level domain name (TLD) registrations stagnating or even shrinking, the growth of .id domain names is particularly eye-catching:

1. Significant growth in registrations

According to statistics, the net growth of .id has exceeded 100,000 registered domain names in the past year. What is even more impressive is that the net increase of the domain name in the past year is close to 400,000, a rate that usually only occurs when new generic top-level domain names (gTLDs) are promoted through aggressive discounts.

2. Coexistence of third-level and second-level structures

.id provides a variety of extensions for users to choose from, including more than a dozen third-level structure domain names such as .co.id, .net.id and .or.id. At the same time, the second-level domain name is also widely open, among which .my.id is the most popular extension, accounting for more than one-third of the total registrations. This diversified structure attracts different types of registration needs, from enterprises to individuals.

3. Population base and Internet penetration rate

As the world's fourth most populous country, Indonesia has a population of 277 million, of which about 69% have access to the Internet. This means that the domestic market itself constitutes a huge potential support for domain name registration demand.

2. New members in the global TLD landscape

Currently, at least 40 top-level domain names in the world have reached the million level or more in registrations. With the addition of .id, it has become an increasingly important part of the global domain name ecosystem, and also shows the irreplaceable position of ccTLD in localized network use.

The rapid growth of .id shows that the demand for national top-level domain names in regional markets remains strong, especially in countries where Internet use is gradually becoming popular. With the further development of Indonesia's network ecology, the registration volume of .id may continue to rise, and may inspire and influence the ccTLD and gTLD markets in other regions.
