Registrants submit their domain names to a registrar for registration, who then submits them to the registry. Domain name real-name verification, domain transfers, and domain deletions ultimately require review and approval by the registry.

Country and regional top-level domains are delegated by IANA to national domain name registries, such as DENIC in Germany, Nominet in the UK, and the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) in mainland China.
