According to the official website of Lloyds Auctions, the official code domain name "XBT.com" of the Bitcoin International Standards Organization ISO has been launched for auction. The auction will end on March 28, 2024, with a starting price of US$2,798,917. Lee Hames, COO of Lloyds Auctions, said in a statement that considering the scarcity and global influence of the domain name, the auction is expected to attract bids from well-known investors or companies including Musk, Bezos and even Trump.

"XBT" is the official currency code of Bitcoin in ISO 4217, an international universal currency code system established by the International Organization for Standardization, mainly used to identify legal currencies and certain digital assets worldwide. Similar to precious metal codes such as gold (XAU) and silver (XAG), Bitcoin obtained the code "XBT" around 2013 for standardized processing in financial markets and settlement systems.

Although "BTC" has become a more widely used abbreviation in the Bitcoin community, some well-known digital asset trading platforms are still using the "XBT" logo. For example, exchanges such as Kraken and BitMEX still use XBT as certain URL paths, API endpoints, and trading pair symbols. However, during Bitcoin's last halving cycle in 2020, more trading platforms gradually transitioned to "BTC", resulting in a decrease in the use of the "XBT" code in the market.

The "XBT.com" domain name auctioned this time has significant brand value and financial attributes due to its close association with the Bitcoin ISO code. Driven by scarcity and market demand, the starting price of XBT.com is close to US$2.8 million, which is in line with the market trend of high-value crypto-related domain names in recent years. For example, in 2021, "ETH.com" was reported to have a bid of up to US$20 million, while the key domain name "BTC.com" was sold for US$7.5 million as early as 2014, becoming one of the most influential domain name transactions in the crypto field.
